Md. sales tax increases to help Delaware?

December 11, 2007

When our state sales tax rises to 6 percent in January, Delaware retailers are hoping to glean even more business from Marylanders willing to cross state lines to purchase big-ticket items.

The (Salisbury) Daily Times reports that some Maryland shoppers already drive past the state line, far into Delaware to buy those expensive purchases (HD TV, anyone?) - and the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce is up in arms.

The CoC in our northeastern county is trying to persuade businesses to pay the sales tax for customers, and therefore keep prices as low as possible.

Any business owners out there who’d be willing to do this?

Will that extra 1 percent tax really be the breaking point for Maryland shoppers who are already close to the border?
