They were only foolin’

April 2, 2008

I have to admit, Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon did have me going there for a minute Tuesday evening when they announced on their ESPN show, Pardon the Interruption, that Davidson College and University of Kansas would have to replay the last 17 seconds of their Elite Eight basketball game because a Kansas player on the court had fouled out but was still in the game.

They even got into one of their typical shouting matches until they finally broke down and told their shocked audience (or at least I was shocked) that the joke was on them.

It was a classic April Fool’s joke — absurd and off the wall, but with just enough credibility to keep you hooked. But my hat goes off to Qualcomm for its April Fool’s campaign — a Web site devoted to a new cell phone implant called “HandSolo.” Not only does it get a Star Wars reference (to the Harrison Ford’s character, Han Solo) in the title, but it produced an elaborate Web site complete with a YouTube video. (Hat tip to Frank Ahrens from the Washington Post for pointing out the site.)

It just goes to show you’re never too old for April Fool’s day. Did any other business owners out there take the opportunity to play a prank on any unsuspecting customers or co-workers?
