The decoy bank job
October 3, 2008
In these tough economic times it’s understandable people responded to a Craigslist ad posted Saturday offering $30 an hour for a city gardening job in Monroe, Wash. The posting even specified the appropriate work attire: safety glasses, ventilator mask, yellow safety vest and a blue, long-sleeved shirt.
But when an unspecified number of people arrived at a parking lot next to a bank Tuesday ready to work, it turned out their job merely was to be decoys for an enterprising thief.
Monroe police and FBI officials are still searching for the man, dressed like the other gardeners, who used pepper spray to grab a bag of money from a Brinks armored truck guard and then floated down a nearby creek to make his getaway, according to The Herald in nearby Everett.
A Monroe police spokeswoman said there was no city work project planned. Officials are still searching for the suspect and information surrounding the Cragslist posting.
Ironically, for all of the thief’s efforts, “police weren’t drawn off course by the men wearing work clothing,” The Herald reported.
