Law blog round-up
September 8, 2008
Hello! Here are a few law links for your Monday:
- Retired Somerset County Circuit Court Judge Lloyd “Hot Dog” Simpkins sounds like a real character. (I mean, the mere fact that he’s nicknamed Hot Dog is pretty cool.) “There’s nothing I can tell on him that can be said in mixed company,” a buddy of his told The Daily Times. Anyone out there who’s appeared before Simpkins have a good story about him?
- There aren’t enough judges to hear district court cases in Charles County, so the court is canceling dockets.
- John McCain should’ve talked more in his acceptance speech about his philosophy on appointing judges, says Ed Whelan. That issue doesn’t decide elections, replies Jack Balkin. (Thanks to Balkinzation for the link to Whelan.)
- Joe Biden was a great law professor, former students tell the Chester County, Pa., Daily Local. Thanks to The Volokh Conspiracy for the link.
- They say Baltimore lags a few months (years? decades?) behind New York, fashion-wise. Does that apply to judicial fashion, too? The WSJ Law Blog links to this NYT piece about judges who “accent” their robes or leave the robes undone. This isn’t something I’ve seen in Maryland. Have you? Would seeing a judge with jewelry hanging over the robe or a judge with an unzipped robe (yes, wearing something underneath) make you question his or her professionalism?
