Name game hits close to home
May 16, 2008
I was in Baltimore County Circuit Court last week listening to Jason League, an assistant state’s attorney, when I thought: “You don’t hear of many middle-aged men named Jason.” A quick mental Rolodex of my parents’ friends yielded no one named Jason, at least none that I can recall. While I can think of a few older guys named Jason (the late Jason Robards, Jason Alexander of “Seinfeld” fame), most of the Jasons I know are in their 20s and 30s.
Sunday, I learned there may not be many Jasons in the pipeline after reading the Social Security Administration’s list of most popular baby names for last year in Parade magazine. (I’m a big “Howard Huge” fan.)
Jacob retained the top spot for boys for the eighth consecutive year, while Emily was the top choice for girls for the 11th straight year, according to Parade. The names in the boys’ top ten remained the same compared to 2006, just in a slightly different order, while the only change in the girls’ top 10 was Elizabeth replacing Samantha at No. 10.
Jason was No. 59 for last year, according to the full list released by the SSA on Monday, dropping four spots from 2006.
Daniel, incidentally, was No. 5 in 2007, up one spot from 2006. Which means that, calculating the average popularity of the two names, I would be the third-most popular person in the United States if I went by “Daniel Jacob.”
