State, Constellation need to settle ASAP, Ehrlich says

March 20, 2008

Constellation Energy Group Inc. and Gov. Martin O’Malley’s administration could be hammering out a deal to settle their dueling lawsuits as you read this blog post.

Former Gov. Robert Ehrlich Jr. sure hopes the two sides will see eye-to-eye sooner rather than later. As he sees it, the lawsuits are “a loser for both parties and we hope it gets settled pretty quickly.”

Ehrlich was governor during the General Assembly’s special session in 2006 where the $386 million deal was sealed, but he wasn’t happy with it then, and he isn’t happy with it now.

“If the right thing would have been done in 2006 there wouldn’t be a lawsuit,” he told me.

In fact, Ehrlich vetoed the legislation in favor of giving customers $600 million, but only if Constellation’s merger with Florida Light & Power went through. As you might recall, that deal went up in smoke, which would have left ratepayers without any relief for the 72 percent rate hike.

What do you think? Was Ehrlich’s deal the better option?

If Ehrlich and his do-nothing PSC had done “the right thing” by paying actual attention to the problem before the 72-percent meltdown rather than ignoring things for his entire term in office, there wouldn’t have been the need for such ratepayer relief.

He’s like the last person in the world who should be givng advice.

Really, who cares what “bobby the lobby” thinks. How does winning a fluke election warrant pundit status (not that it’s very high status). He should be relegated to writing comments to blogs just like everyone else, particularly now that Chip Franklin is gone. What a relief to be rid of the B&K Comedy Hour. Why resurrect nightmares from yesteryear.

Oh O’Malley’s hacks found the blogs! Let’s all congratulate them and then ask them why Governor O’Malley passed the largest tax hike in Maryland history? Or why did Martin O’Malley’s hand-picked PSC rubber stamp the massive BGE rate hikes?

Both the former and present governor overpromised and underpreformed this area. Frankly, Constellation was too smart for them both. Maryland’s only hope is to create a public nuclear power authority to develop new nuclear generation. Testimony before the General Assembly last week ( the finance committee on Friday) confirmed we will have rolling blackouts in 2011. New nuclear sources will not be here by then but we must start now. Platitudes like “the cheapest kilowatt is the one not used” will not cut it. Remember they used no kilowatts in the Dark Ages and life expectancy was about 36. Without electric power life is short, brutal and unpleasant . Just watch “Sam Adams” on HBO. They were the ulimate power conservationists. If that is life for you, parts of Uzbekistan are your ideal neighborhood.

Words fail you once again? You should be careful what you reveal. The surest sign of an uneducated person is that he thinks history begins with him.

Well, I don’t think Brad is thinking that history starts with him, I think Brad is just concerned that his country has taken a turn for the worse and is over taxing and turning into a fascist state.

Got something to say?
