An alliance? Comptroller Peter Franchot and General Assembly Republicans were having a fine old time this week when the state’s top tax collector paid a visit to the Joint Republican Caucus.

At a pre-session briefing Wednesday, Republicans lauded Franchot, a Democrat, for some issues where he has been closer to their positions than to the positions of some members of his own party. And even though he was actually the first named defendant in the Republican bid to overturn the laws passed in last fall’s special session, Franchot was an outspoken opponent of the special session from the start.

And like many Montgomery County Dems, Franchot agrees with Republicans that the state sales tax on computer services should be repealed. Maybe the good blood will pay off. Republicans seemed intrigued by Franchot’s request for more money to step up corporate tax enforcement.
